Shiga's Community Garden started out as an empty lot, left undeveloped for more than 30 years. Neighborhood volunteers are working to transform the property into a new P-Patch for Seattle's University District. The landowner has signed a 3.5 year lease with the City (expiring 2012), and may choose to construct an apartment building here in the future. Neighbors hope that the Parks Department will acquire the property as permanent open space given enough community support. Other potential buyers may include the P-Patch Trust and Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods.
